7 Card Stud Poker - How To Play

7 Card Stud Poker has to be one of the most interesting and often one of the most demanding of poker games, but like most poker variants with practice, skill and good judgement plus a sensible 7 Card Stud Strategy you can soon master and become a much better player. It usd to be the most popular of all multiplay poker games until it was overtaken by Texas Holdem.

7 Card Stud follows a set game play and it all begins with every player receiving 2 cards, one of these cards are dealt face down and the other is face up.

Each players upcard is compared and the player who is holding the lowest ranked one has to pay the bring in, then once this has been paid the betting will continue in the normal clockwise fashion.

The Bring-In - Initial Betting Round

The bring in is basically the initial bet to set the game on its way and as such the next person to make his move after the player with the lowest up card is not permitted to check.

There are on occasions, times when two players may have the same low cards and when this happens the suit of the card will be used to determine the lowest ranked hand

There is no hard and set rule on which is the highest suit as most rooms utilize their own rankings but the following is the most common diamonds (lowest), followed by clubs, hearts, and spades (highest).

In game where no bring in is used then the first betting round will commence with the player who has the highest ranked upcard.

The person sat in the first spot after the dealer (in a clockwise fashion) will be first to bet, this player in this type of game is permitted to check their hand.

7 Card Stud Poker - Playing The Game

Once the first round of betting has been completed another upcard is dealt to each player, the player with the highest ranked poker hand based on these upcards is the person who starts this betting round. This opening betting rule will continue from this round onwards.

The first player to bet at this stage may check or raise his wager up to the games maximum limit. The remaining rounds follow the same betting pattern.

The final round will result in all players still in the game receiving a down card and then a showdown may be put into play whereby each player simply has to make the best five card poker hand he can out of the seven cards he was dealt.
